Introducing UNTITLED, ART Monuments

                 Introducing UNTITLED, ART Monuments

Futurescape Miami: Skyline to Shoreline presented by Facebook Art Department, Rendering courtesy Pekka Niittyvirta and Timo Aho.
Monuments is a new initiative by UNTITLED, ART focusing on bringing large-scale, site-specific installations to the public.
The Facebook Art Department, which includes the FB AIR (Artist in Residence), ARL (Analog Research Lab), and Creative Engagement programs, is pleased to present Futurescape Miami: Skyline to Shoreline.
The word 'futurescape' has been used since the last century to evoke visions of shining city skylines and self-flying cars, evidence of humanity's ambitious quest to conquer the laws of nature by building ever closer to the sky and ever farther from the earth. In urban environments, we become increasingly aware of this seemingly boundless effort to rise; our eyes are encouraged to seek out lofty steel peaks, and our literal and existential perspectives shift from the land and seascapes of the past to the skyscapes of the promised future. It has been easy to forget about the earth itself beneath the cities where we live––and the power of the sea to shape it, and our lives.
The artists featured in Facebook Art Department's exhibition Futurescape Miami: Skyline to Shoreline invites visitors to consider the idea of 'futurescape' not as one that solely describes skylines but also encompasses an increasing consideration of the impact of sea-level rise and shifting shorelines.
Finnish artists Pekka Niittyvirta and Timo Aho will install lines of light on South Beach as a visual warning of the long-term effects of climate change on the landscape. San Francisco-based artists Hughen/Starkweather have created research-based abstract artworks that reference past and future climate-related events. The respective practices of artist and scientist Brandon Ballengée and Miami-based artists Thom Wheeler Castillo, Xavier Cortada, and Misael Soto address global climate change through participatory activations, installations, and performances. For more information and a full schedule of workshop and activations, please visit futurescapemiami.splashthat.com.

FLIGHT
9 channel video with 3 channel sound
Duration: 11 minutes
Deborah Oropallo and Andy Rappaport present FLIGHT, 9-channel video installation, that refers to mass migration and global displacement—the geopolitical crisis of our time. Whether due to climate change, persecution, regional conflict, drought, flood, or fire, humans are losing their homes in a worldwide chain of mass flight. Call them migrants, refugees, asylum seekers, ex-pats; call it migration, resettlement, or displacement; the terms are irrelevant. These are people, and it is a humanitarian tragedy.
In the video, a continuous stream of boats crosses the split screens of the vast and dark ocean. The faces of the individuals draw closer to the viewer as people reach the shores. We witness in their faces and their actions, their courage, desperation, fear, loss, and hope. We see the various means of transport and escape reflecting the customs and traditions of their former homes: wooden boats, inflatables, hand-built rafts made out of anything that floats. But inside and around the crafts, we see the same desires and unknowns.
Now think about how the cascade of human tragedies will accelerate as we face the most significant migration driver in human history: Climate Change.

Open Studios, Brunch & Tour

The exhibition highlights the works of artists Ossei-Mensah encounters while traveling around the globe. The show is loosely inspired by Jack Kerouac’s 1957 Beat Generation novel On the Road, which explores the travels of young men across postwar America; the book’s title and historical context galvanize Ossei-Mensah’s interrogation of contemporary issues of mobility, freedom, and identity at a time marked by political and societal unease.

The exhibition showcases 40 international modern and contemporary artists who resonate with the pioneering thought of two Caribbean writers, Lydia Cabrera and Édouard Glissant. The artists and collectives in the exhibition consider notions of shifting and porous borders—geographic, national, cultural, social, racial, ethnic, and linguistic—and how crossing borders has shaped our world.
The exhibition is curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Asad Raza, Gabriela Rangel, and Rina Carvajal.
