The time has come people, to say goodbye to summer in Miami. The days are already getting darker sooner, but that doesn’t mean we’ve got to be sad about it. It means cooler, sweeter nights are ahead of us. It means things like Darius Live at 1306, YoungArts Dance Residencies, and epic shows by names like Father John Misty at The Fillmore. We’ve got a lot to look forward to, here’s what:

Sunday, September 16th: 

Reggae Sundays – Kulcha Shok Reggae Sundays A.K.A. Church is held at the beautiful outdoor venue Wynwood Yard. Live music from Red Lyte, and as always The Kulcha Shok Crew. Bands Play 6-7pm & 8-9pm, otherwise it’s DJ time with Lance-O vibing every 4-6pm. Every 4th Sunday is Kulcha Latino, with a focus on Spanish and Latin Reggae Music.

Monday, September 17th:

Tuesday, September 18th: 

Terrestrial Funk – Terrestrial Funk is a local record label and shop operated by Miami New Times DJ of the Year, Brother Dan. Every Tuesday they showcase local DJs and operate their mobile record store on the front lot at Gramps. Party runs four to eight, 50% off drinks from four to seven.

Almodovar II – Following the success of their recent retrospective of Spain’s revered filmmaker, Coral Gables Arts Cinema were deluged by requests for additional gems from Almodóvar’s middle period – some say his finest. Launching this limited one-week series will be Dark Habits (Entre tinieblas), the film that introduced the maverick director’s work in the US with its premiere at the first Miami Film Festival in 1984.

Soundbowl Healing with Marianna – Certified soundbowl practitioner, Marianna Lopez, will be leading the event with a series of soundbowls all aimed at breaking down stuck or blocked energy and recharging the body. This energetic breakdown will be reinforced with breathwork to create powerful release of old or stagnant energy that no longer serves the body.

Wednesday, September 19th: 

Electric Groove & Speakerbox Present MIXING – MIXING is a concept party where things come together to become fused and combined into a wonderful, groovy, friendly, and fine gathering. Led by tune selectors, you can expect house music vibes and sexy grooves, perfect for dancing into the late hours. Come and join this wonderful celebration of life.

Jazz at The Yard – Tables are pulled up near the stage for that jazzy club feel under the Eventstar Structures pavilion. This series is curated by musician and co-founder of Guitars Over Guns, Chad Bernstein.

Third Thursdays: Poplife Social ft. Laganja Estranja – YoungArts is taking over PAMM’s Poplife Social for a fabulous fan dance class and special performance on the terrace featuring Laganja Estranja. Throughout the evening, get creative with themed art-making, explore the galleries, and enjoy happy hour specials by Verde.

Xaviera Simmons: Sundown – David Castillo Gallery is proud to present Sundown, Xaviera Simmons’ fifth solo exhibition with the gallery. The show features all new text paintings, photography, and sculpture.

A People’s History of South Florida Series – This program series looks at Miami’s history, from early settlers to its current evolution into a global city. Discussion points will include immigration, civil rights, gentrification, and other topics that help tell the story of the Magic City.

Sofar Sounds Concert for Human Rights – Join Amnesty International Miami and Sofar Sounds for an intimate secret concert benefiting the human rights work of Amnesty International locally and globally. Friday, September 21st: 

Dan Colen Artist Lecture – American contemporary artist, Dan Colen will discuss his practice and experimental approach to materials, revealing his method of working across mediums that give focus to the ephemeral nature of everyday life. Using materials that might otherwise be overlooked, Colen creates contemplative works full of vibrant color.

Happy Hour at Madame Phuong – Come join food writer & blogger Elena V and Dade & Confused Entertainment for tiki drinks and 80s vibes at the Upper Eastside’s newest hot spot Madame Phuong, located inside Phuc Yea.

Laser Fridays – On the first and third Friday, Frost Science will be rocking out with a retro throwback to the classic laser light spectacles you know and love. The Seaquarium’s 63rd Birthday Beach Cleanup – In honor of 63 years of Miami Seaquarium ocean entertainment, education and conservation, they are hosting a beach clean-up at Historic Virginia Key Beach Park. There’s no better way to share this day than by helping make one of our local beaches a cleaner and safer place to be.

NWS Open House, Presented by Baptist – The New World Symphony invites members of the general public to its home, the New World Center, to explore, listen and learn. Through this new event, they are delighted to welcome the community to make memories and to “Come Be Inspired” by sampling all NWS has to offer, experiencing it hands-on and up close.

Opening – 28°04’44″n 80°42’22″w – 28°04’44″N 80°42’22″W functions as a study of the topography of i-95 as a uniquity of Florida’s macro-architecture. Symbolically these spaces represent the unpopulated pockets of space that Thomas and his contemporaries commandeered as teenagers to seek the autonomy traditionally unavailable to minors. The spaces are activated through the inclusion of narrative elements pulled directly from Thomas’s personal history, highlighting the absurdities of his Floridian upbringing.

Juana Molina w/ Afrobeta – Opening set by Afrobeta Presented by Rhythm Foundation with support from Poplife99. Argentinian indie-folk-electronic star, Juana Molina, makes a rare Miami appearance coming off recent dates opening for David Byrne on the South American leg of his American Utopia Tour.

Run Lola Run (35mm) – A thrilling post-MTV, roller-coaster ride, Run Lola Run is the third film by director Tom Tykwer, a frequent collaborator of the Wachowski’s (Tywker co-directed Cloud Atlas and episodes of Sense8). Time is running out for Lola (Franka Potente). She’s just received a frantic phone call from her boyfriend, Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu), who’s lost a small fortune belonging to his mobster boss. If Lola doesn’t replace the money in twenty minutes, Manni will be killed.

Homegrown Bites, Brews & Bands – If it doesn’t have ties to the 305 you won’t find it here. Miami’s first indoor festival featuring live art, live music, DJs, and plenty of local craft brews from MIA, The TANK, CONCRETE, Funky Buddha, Wynwood and Veza Sur. Throw in some local vendors promoting all things 305–and, headliner and Miami IT-girl KAT DAHLIA and you got one heck of a par-tée.

RAW POP UP LAB / Brickell City Centre –  RAW POP UP is pioneering the Interactive Art Movement (IAM). RAW POP UP / LAB is a multisensory experiment of art, music, technology, and performance art where guests take on a more active role. Thirty local and international creators and performers will collaborate as a collective for two weeks to transform a 11,500 square foot raw space into a multisensory experience for you to explore at Brickell City Centre.

Friday, September 28th:

Jay Jackson – Immersive Dance Theater – Choreographer, drag queen and LA-based activist Jay Jackson (2007 Winner in Dance & U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts) premieres a new immersive dance theater work exploring non-binary identity and the gradient on which gender exists in contemporary society. Created during Jackson’s three-week residency at YoungArts, this original work will use text, vocal compositions, set design and choreography to create interactive spaces and moments for personal and group reflection in the iconic YoungArts Jewel Box.

The King and I – The lavish film version of the Rodgers & Hammerstein comes replete with evergreen gems such as “I Whistle a Happy Tune,” “Hello Young Lovers,” “Getting to Know You,” and “Shall We Dance?” The King and I won five Oscars (Actor, Music Score, Costume Design, Art Direction & Set Decoration and Sound) and was nominated for four more (Picture, Director, Actress and Cinematography).

Not Lost in Translation: An Evening with Rene Gonzalez – Architect Rene Gonzalez, former Wolfsonian advisory board member and longtime friend of the museum, introduces his new book “Not Lost in Translation,” followed by a conversation with director Tim Rodgers and book signing in The Wolfsonian Design Store. Responding to climate change, sustainability, and timeless design, Gonzalez’s local work includes CIFO Art Museum, GLASS, and Alchemist Boutique.

Daybreaker MIA: Groovey Groove – On Saturday, September 29th, Daybreaker is coming together for fall kickoff with every bell and whistle to make it unmissable. The Miami Record Fair – Brought to you by the kind folks at Terrestrial Funk and Gramps. The largest selection of records Miami has to offer. 28 tables covered in records from a slew of vendors from around South Florida. Family friendly, dog friendly, tens of thousands of records to dig through from private sellers and local shops. Gramps’ delicious cocktails and selection of beer, Pizza Tropical, Rare and exotic fruits and smoothies. Live music (YOU can dj at the record fair, they’ll be doing a signup sheet the day of starting at 11am.

The Girls Lunchbox September Getty – This Girls Lunchbox is a Miami based, queer membership club, spearheaded by Octavia Yearwood and Najja Moon. The goal is to nurture a space for all queer creative womxn to convene. The Getty is a multi-disciplinary arts space making way for all spectrums of the social arc. Guests can engage in a variety of “snacks”: a large scale visual arts project, tuck themselves away in the writers room, or dance the night away to the sounds.
