Culture Guide: September 16th to 30th
The time has come people, to say goodbye to summer in Miami. The days are already getting darker sooner, but that doesn’t mean we’ve got to be sad about it. It means cooler, sweeter nights are ahead of us. It means things like Darius Live at 1306, YoungArts Dance Residencies, and epic shows by names like Father John Misty at The Fillmore. We’ve got a lot to look forward to, here’s what:

Reggae Sundays – Kulcha Shok Reggae Sundays A.K.A. Church is held at the beautiful outdoor venue Wynwood Yard. Live music from Red Lyte, and as always The Kulcha Shok Crew. Almodovar II – Following the success of their recent retrospective of Spain’s revered filmmaker, Coral Gables Arts Cinema were deluged by requests for additional gems from Almodóvar’s middle period – some say his finest. Launching this limited one-week series will be Dark Habits (Entre tinieblas), the film that introduced the maverick director’s work in the US with its premiere at the first Miami Film Festival in 1984.

Soundbowl Healing with Marianna – Certified soundbowl practitioner, Marianna Lopez, will be leading the event with a series of soundbowls all aimed at breaking down stuck or blocked energy and recharging the body. This energetic breakdown will be reinforced with breathwork to create powerful release of old or stagnant energy that no longer serves the body.

Opening – 28°04’44″n 80°42’22″w – 28°04’44″N 80°42’22″W functions as a study of the topography of i-95 as a uniquity of Florida’s macro-architecture. Symbolically these spaces represent the unpopulated pockets of space that Thomas and his contemporaries commandeered as teenagers to seek the autonomy traditionally unavailable to minors. The spaces are activated through the inclusion of narrative elements pulled directly from Thomas’s personal history, highlighting the absurdities of his Floridian upbringing.

Jay Jackson – Immersive Dance Theater – Choreographer, drag queen and LA-based activist Jay Jackson (2007 Winner in Dance & U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts) premieres a new immersive dance theater work exploring non-binary identity and the gradient on which gender exists in contemporary society. Created during Jackson’s three-week residency at YoungArts, this original work will use text, vocal compositions, set design and choreography to create interactive spaces and moments for personal and group reflection in the iconic YoungArts Jewel Box.

The Girls Lunchbox September Getty – This Girls Lunchbox is a Miami based, queer membership club, spearheaded by Octavia Yearwood and Najja Moon. The goal is to nurture a space for all queer creative womxn to convene. The Getty is a multi-disciplinary arts space making way for all spectrums of the social arc. Guests can engage in a variety of “snacks”: a large scale visual arts project, tuck themselves away in the writers room, or dance the night away to the sounds.
