American Social Restaurant Review
Brunch is always a good way to start your day, especially if you haven't had a decent breakfast, however there are a lot of places to choose from when it comes to dinning. In search of a good brunch place to host a visiting friend I went to find somewhere that is good, in my search I was not so sure about the Miami brunch scene because it is something that I have never done before. I have tried their restaurants for dinner but not brunch. So I went on Google and typed in Best places for brunch in Miami. I was excited to search for a restaurant which has now become a new adventure for me. I wanted a good restaurant with unlimited mimosas, there was a list of names that came up, it wasn't a long list just a brief one of seven restaurants that showed up on my screen. On the list of restaurants were American Social, Batch Gastropub, Beaker and Gary, 15th and Vine Kitchen Bar, The Local House, Orange Blossom, Angelique Euro Cafe. These were all restaurants that opens around 11am or 12pm. I am not a meat eater but I do however eat seafood, so the restaurant has to carry food that I can enjoy as well.
So I sent the list along to my guest and told him to choose a restaurant and I decided on the time, of 12:30 pm as the time for us to meet each other at the restaurant. So he decided to go with American Social, because he is an American himself born and raised in Brooklyn New York. I arrived at the restaurant first I was kind of lost due to it being my first time, I walked in the first doors I saw looking for the receptionist/Hostess front desk area. I walked a little to my right and I was greeted by the manager. He asked how would he be able to assist me today? I replied that I was looking for a table for two. He told me that would be fine and for me to follow him. He walked further right and I proceeded behind him. He went around a glass area after we passed what seemed to be a very long bar area. He greeted the hostess and grabbed two menus, he asked where would I like to sit inside or out? I told him outside! he walked me outside and asked me where would I like to sit? I saw the tables and s small comfortable lounge area. I decided on the lounge area and he said okay great. I sat down and he placed the menus on the table and told me that a waiter would be with me shortly. My friend arrived shortly after I did, I received a call on my phone telling me he is outside. I said great! I am seated out on the deck by the water in the lounge area. We sat down and decided to change seats shortly after because the seats were really low and his legs were really long. So we went to another lounge area with a taller table and it was more comfortable to sit and eat. The waiter greeted us and then asked if we wanted something to drink to start us off, I asked did they have the unlimited mimosas and he said no, that will only be on Saturday and Sunday. Keep in mind a decision was made on the brunch location, because of the unlimited mimosas so that did not go well for me at all. The waiter made light of the situation by turning it in a joke, "you are a day early but we can give you shots until tomorrow to keep you entertained". I giggled and said well I am pretty sure with that many shots I wouldn't be able to make it to the mimosas tomorrow, I would be too drunk to keep drinking. The jokes continued with him saying well that's what I'm here for when people get too drunk I just throw them on my shoulder and hail a cab and send them home. We all laughed in unison!
I looked over the drink menu, not sure what to choose I asked what drinks did he have with champagne within the drink. He showed me a drink by the name of Belvedere Bliss, my friend decided to go with whatever I got because he is not a drinker. The drink contains Watermelon & Rosemary Infused belvedered vodka/ST Germain liquer/Moet Champagne/Watermelon juice. I was excited to try the drink! We waited 20 minutes before receiving our drinks and when we did receive our drinks I like my drink, however my friend did not like his. After we received or drinks and tried it we placed an order for appetizers. I went with the crab cakes, it is something that is hard to go wrong with. One of my favorite appetizers of all time! My friend wanted to try the Shrimp Tacos, I was skeptical of the Shrimp Tacos when I saw it on the menu so I decided against it. He was bold and went for it, one place that I would order a Shrimp Taco from would be a Mexican restaurant for sure. The appetizer menu also presented a Spinach Dip with Peta bread, oysters, calamari and a few other options. The waiter asked if we wanted to order our food with the appetizer but we decided against it. When the appetizers did arrive I had 6 bite size crab cakes with and orange sauce beneath it. The Shrimp Tacos did not look appealing to the eyes when we first looked at it. I said to my friend, that looks weird, the shrimps look funny. The shrimps were of an orange color which was not appealing to the eye, we had hopes of it tasting better than it looked. We tried the Crab cakes first, it wasn't the best crab cakes that I have taste but it wasn't the worst. There was more bread in the crab cakes than actual crab meat; I was not too happy but I also was not dissatisfied. My friend then grabbed one of the crab cakes at bit into it; not bad was the words he uttered but he wanted to dig into his Shrimp Tacos to see how it taste. He told to try it, I said no you try it first and after you do I will. We both bit into the tacos at the same time I was truly disappointed by the taste and the flavor combination. It was very weird for me, the shrimp was fresh the bread crumbs that covered it was displeasing to say the lease, my taste buds were very unhappy. My friend shouted "this taste like they just went fishing and got the shrimp fresh out of the water". I was confused to the words he uttered. Unaware of what the statement means I said to him what does that mean? He then said this is disgusting I'm not going to eat this.
At this point I'm pretty sure the waiter heard the commotion the place was not packed the crowd was very
light considering that it was still early in the day time. The waiter came back to the table to ask if we were okay and did we need anything else. I told him that the Shrimp Taco was not appeasing to either party and we would like something else. He said that was okay what else would we like, his hospitality was greatly appreciate and his patience was appreciated as well. However this is something that someone is paying for so the satisfaction of product needs to be present. I asked what does he believe would be the best appetizers on the menu and what does he like? The waiter stated he liked the Spinach Dip so we decided to proceed with that. I do not eat any dairy but the dip is made with cheese I knew that I would pay for this later but I went ahead and ordered it anyway. When it arrived at the table we both dipped in at the same time. We were both shocked after our encounter with our two previous appetizer we had. It was something that was very enjoyable and delicious, we could not stop eating. We ran out of Pita bread and requested more, that was the first good thing we enjoyed at the table from we sat down. Ten minutes later the waiter returned and asked if were were ready to order. I went with the Salmon Burger because I wanted to play it safe and it is hard to go wrong with salmon. My friend decided to go with the Turkey Sandwich instead of any burgers. He was already traumatized so he did not want any more trauma for the day or any more surprises do he wanted to play it safe. The Food Menu consisted of Seafood, Burgers, Chicken, Steak and Pork. Chicken and waffles, Short ribs, American Social Mac & Cheese, BBQ Bacon Burger, Salmon Burger, Drunken Goat, Sirloin, Seafood Paella, Chicken Pesto Bucatini and much more.
The food arrived twenty minutes later and we both started eating. I was not 100% happy with the salmon burger but I do not believe in wasting food and I am also not the person that will send everything back. The salmon was red on the inside as in not cooked completely. The sweet potato fries that came with it was covered with sugar and Cinnamon which was weird in taste. The sauce that came with the salmon burger I requested it on the side instead of on the burger. I was not fully sold on the meal I had but the waiter that served us made the experience a lot less painful. I am sure there are other things on the menu that taste good but that experience for me was not the best or good food wise, Upon my next visit I do wish for better and I am optimistic it will change my first review for them. Sometimes the first time things does not go well but it does not mean the 2nd attempt or meeting will not change your mind on the person or place. I am hoping it was juat an off day for them because the restaurant generates a large crowd and good reviews by other customers.
