In groups of 100, the shoppers will have 5-10 minutes to fill their custom MELGAARD garbage bags with as much as they can carry. Once their time is up, shoppers will be immediately evacuated from the premise. Coinciding with New York Fashion Week, Melgaard launches The Casual Pleasure of Disappointment, an unrelenting multi-site, multi-night, culmination of his ongoing ‘fashion’ project. Centered around Red Bull Arts New York, which Melgaard and company have transformed into a multilevel psycho-pathological department store that opens to the public on February 16, the space will be populated by an army of genetically enhanced mannequins in bespoke looks styled by Avena Gallegher. Gavin Brown’s enterprise will function as the jewelry department – hosting the American launch of his collaboration with jeweler Bjørg Nordli-Mathisen (BJØRG), on view from February 11 through 19. Produced in collaboration with creative director Babak Radboy, the exhibition will feature a presentation of the eponymous menswear/unisex clothing line, MELGAARD, which violently embraces the obsessive and self-destructive aspects of fashion and consumerism. Read More Bjarne & Bjørg at Gavin Brown's enterprise On View February 11– 19, 2017 Opening Reception: February 11, 5-8PM On February 11th 2017, GBE will host the American launch of The Casual Pleasure of Disappointment, a collaborative jewelry collection by artist Bjarne Melgaard and designer Bjørg Nordli-Mathisen (BJØRG). The collection made its European debut at the Astrup Fearnley Museum this past November in Oslo. Based on drawings, sketches and text, the Melgaard/BJØRG jewelry collection is comprised of over 100 unique pieces studded with diamonds, emeralds, rubies and colorful gems. Here is Melgaard’s world recreated on a miniature scale; his ongoing investigation into the complicated relationship between love and capital could hardly find a better driving medium than that of jewelry, and mini-pigs. The collection revolves around themes of consumption, obsession, desire, and imminent disappointment. His personal statements – “CHEATED FOR CASH,” “LIES TO MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER,” or “PITTY FUCK” are animated as diamond encrusted advertisements hanging on oversized gold and silver chains and embellished with original drawings, hand-made voodoo dolls and human hair. At the opening reception on February 11th, the gallery will be transformed into a runway to more than a dozen mini-pigs and security guards adorned in jewelry.
